BASIC INFORMATION AND SELECTION PROCEDURE

I. OPENING AND CLOSING OF THE COURSE:

The Basic Ophthalmology Course “Guillermo Picó Santiago” of the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico, will take place virtually from February 4 to March 29, 2021. The conferences will be held on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays of each week. There will be four hours of lectures per day with an interval between them. The course is sponsored by the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology and the University of Puerto Rico.

II. STUDENTS:

The curriculum is designed for first and second year residents of Ophthalmology. For almost two months the fundamentals of the science and art of ophthalmology are taught in a systematic and organized manner. It is not a course on clinical advances or specialized techniques. Nor is it a clinical overview, nor is it a symposium that can be missed in segments. Attendance is compulsory for the entire duration of the course. The course delves into fundamental sciences such as optics and refraction, ocular physiology and embryology and other basic disciplines, and then moves on to the fundamental concepts of general ophthalmology, with sections on pathology, ocular pediatrics, external diseases and cornea, glaucoma, retina, uveitis, cataract, neuro-ophthalmology, orbit and plastic surgery. Everything is taught by local and visiting professors, internationally recognized as experts. Its purpose is to strengthen the resident’s knowledge, within the framework of his total formative training. Click here for the application form.
