PAAO President’s Message
August 2020

Dear Friends & Colleagues,
No matter what sort of difficulties, how painful experience is, if we lose our hope, that’s our real disaster.
– Dalai Lama
Following the devastating explosions earlier this month in Beirut, I wish to express my deepest condolences to all the people of Lebanon, and also to the families and friends of those who have been injured or lost their lives.
So many at the PAAO are impacted by this event and its aftermath. I have reached out to numerous colleagues who have families, friends and deep roots in Lebanon and Beirut. Although it is difficult to find words to express the sadness and horror we all feel when thinking of this terrible event, I encourage everyone to offer their compassion and sympathy to friends and collaborators who are suffering after this tragedy.
While there are almost 7 million people living in Lebanon, the international Lebanese community stands at an estimated 14 million others, scattered across the globe. I am heartened to see the global community come together in offering humanitarian aid in this trying time.
We wish the people of Beirut strength, hope, and the support of many allies to help them get through this tragedy, heal, and eventually rebuild.
With affection and admiration,
Miguel N. Burnier Jr. MD MSc PhD
PAAO, President
