Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF)

Lions Clubs International Foundation is the grant-making body of Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest volunteer service club organization. The LCIF SightFirst program, Lions’ flagship initiative, builds comprehensive eye care systems to fight the major causes of blindness and care for blind and visually impaired persons. Since 1990, the SightFirst program has helped restore sight to more than 30 million people around the world. Lions have raised more than $415 million to provide surgeries, to improve of hundreds of eye care facilities and train of thousands of eye care professionals. >Lions/PAAO Award in Blindness Prevention

Established in 2011, the Lions/PAAO Award in Blindness Prevention recognizes an individual ophthalmologist with a record of excellence, innovation, and dedication in the field of blindness prevention. The Lions/PAAO Award in Blindness Prevention is granted once a year to a nominee that is a citizen and practicing ophthalmologist in the host country of the Pan-American Regional Course or Congress.

>Lions SightFirst Research Grants

SightFirst and LCIF are now accepting letters of intent for SightFirst research grants of up to US$100,000. These grants are available to support projects that investigate:

  • Innovative approaches to reduce blindness from cataract;
  • Innovative approaches to reduce blindness from trachoma;
  • Innovative approaches to reduce and correct refractive errors in school-age children; or
  • Epidemiological surveys in geographical areas where there is no recent data available or where repeated surveys may inform existing trends.

Basic laboratory science research will not be supported under this program. The deadline for Letters of Intent (LOI) is November 29, 2013. Invitations to submit full proposals will be distributed no later than January 31, 2014, with full proposals due by February 28, 2014. Grants will be approved by LCIF and commence in August 2014.
