The following qualifications for a successful candidate are as follows:
General ophthalmologist, age 35 years or younger, from Mexico, Central or South America, or the Caribbean.
Fluent in both written and spoken English. Candidates must have taken the TOEFL exam (or equivalent) and submit their results with their application. Mandatory. Candidates will be interviewed by telephone to gauge their English abilities.
Willing to commit for one or two years of training.
Completion of a recognized ophthalmology residency in Latin America.
Applicants with additional training in or those currently practicing pediatric ophthalmology and/or strabismus will be given preference.
Established medical and surgical competence and good depth perception.
Highly recommended by chairperson and training program director.
Commitment to return to Latin America at conclusion of fellowship training program

Medical licensure during program (only applicable to the selected candidate): Either (1) a physician in training license, if all necessary parts of USMLE has been passed, or (2) an Assistant Visiting Professor’s license if USMLE not taken and passed.
Compensation: Salary of approximately $68,640 per year plus fringe benefits will be provided.

** If you have been awarded the Gillingham Pan-American Fellowship, the Latin American/PAAO Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship at UT Southwestern, or the Pyott Retinal Research Fellowship at UC Irvine, you are not eligible to apply for any other Pan-American Scholarship or Award.
** Employees of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO), Pan-American Ophthalmological Foundation (PAOF), members of the PAAO Executive Committee, members of the PAOF Board of Directors, their immediate family members and members of the same household, whether related or not, are not eligible to apply for scholarship/fellowship funding. All scholarships are subject to federal laws and regulations and are void where prohibited by law or regulation. Applicants agree to abide by the terms of these official rules and by decisions of the Review Committee which are final and binding on all matters pertaining to the scholarship/ fellowship.
