
How to prepare engaging classes and present them effectively
This course will teach you how to prepare organized and interesting classes and present them effectively to gain and retain the attention of the participants and increase their learning.

CONTEXT
Being an expert on a medical topic does not necessarily translate into being a good presenter. For this, we need a theoretical framework to help us understand and apply the principles and strategies of teaching through presentations.
Traditional conferences rank very low when measuring effectiveness. This course aims to improve our effectiveness as presenters.
THE DETAILS
Intended for: physicians and other health professionals who use presentations as a teaching method and want to improve their effectiveness.
Duration: Approximately 10 weeks, 1-2 hours a week.
Certificate: 10 hours of PAAO Continuing Medical Education on completion
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course the participants will be able to:
- Describe and apply adult learning principles relevant to lesson preparation and delivery;
- Prepare learning objectives that can be achieved through the class;
- Organize the class structure to make it clearer and more understandable;
- Apply clear and easily readable slide design principles;
- Include different strategies to make the classes interactive;
- List the most significant communication principles to make the most engaging presentations.
PROGRAM
- Principles of adult learning: motivation and relevance, active learning, generational learning.
- Learning Objectives and Segmentation: Setting goals and objectives that will help develop effective learning interventions. Application of “chunking” concept to organize content into effective learning segments.
- Structure of the class: The different parts of a presentation.
- Slide design: backgrounds, formats, contrasts, colors; animations; replacement of text by images; data presentation.
- Interactivity strategies: automatic response systems, work in small groups.
- Preparation of multiple-choice questions: The different types of questions. Its structure, rules, and recommendations
- Approaches As Taught: Different methods when teaching facts, concepts, processes, procedures, and principles.
- Principles of communication: Strategies to capture and maintain attention.
- The future of presentations: the flipped classroom.
- Forgetting curve: How to generate supporting documents
COURSE MATERIALS
- Study guides, that facilitate the student’s learning process.
- Audiovisual lectures prepared by the teaching team on each topic. These will be available for online reading and in a save/print version.
- Reading material, available in Spanish and/or English in pdf format.
- Concept maps
LEARNING ACTIVITIES
At the beginning of the course, each participant will share a PowerPoint presentation that they have already prepared.
As the course progresses, you will modify it according to what you have learned to obtain an improved product. At the end of the course, it will be presented as a final project.
