Gillingham Fellowship
Report by Dr. Claudio Perez
I had an incredible experience during my Clinical Research Fellowship in Glaucoma with Dr. Shan Lin and Dr. Yvonne Ou at UCSF. I had the great opportunity to learn from my mentors and other faculties at the glaucoma department. I was able to improve my knowledge and management in glaucoma care participating in the evaluation of patients in the clinic with the supervision of my mentors and observing glaucoma surgeries in the operating room. Also, was very helpful to participate in the glaucoma meetings, journal clubs and grand rounds of the ophthalmology department. In addition, I was able to conduct interesting research projects in posterior segment OCT, anterior segment OCT and cataract surgery related to glaucoma. These studies were published in important peer-reviewed journals and were presented in meetings such as the American Glaucoma Society and the ARVO meeting in 2018. Also, I was invited by the glaucoma department as a speaker for the UCSF Glaucoma update course in 2018. All these meetings were useful to interact with well-known glaucoma specialists from other countries and to learn new developments in glaucoma.
To conclude, this one-year experience gave me the opportunity to reach my goals to be a better clinician for my patients, researcher and professor for future ophthalmologists and fellows in glaucoma at my institution in Chile. Also, through this fellow I was able to meet great mentors and specialists, which will allow me and my institution to maintain interaction for future projects in the glaucoma field.
