LEADERSHIP PROGRAM: 2023-2025

GENERAL GUIDELINES

MISSION

The Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO) Leadership Development Program (Curso de Liderazgo) aims to provide orientation and skill development to future leaders of national ophthalmology societies and subspecialty societies affiliated with the PAAO.

PROGRAM GOALS

  1. Identify individuals with the potential to become leaders in Ophthalmology.
  2. Provide orientation and skills to allow potential leaders to promote Ophthalmology locally, nationally and across the hemisphere.
  3. Accelerate the promotion of program graduates into leadership positions locally, nationally and across the hemisphere.
  4. The PAAO Curso is a joint investment and commitment between the PAAO, the Candidate and the National Society or Subspecialty Society.

GUIDELINES FOR PARTICIPATION

  1. Note: this is a two (2) year program, Orientation, October 2023 – Final Session, May/June 2025.
  2. Only National Ophthalmology Societies and Subspecialty Societies affiliated with the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology may submit a program participant nomination to the PAAO Curso Selection Committee.
    • Candidates should seek the position through activities within the national society/subspecialty society and the ophthalmology community. Candidates may not self-nominate.
  3. The National Ophthalmology Society or Subspecialty Society interested in the program may nominate only one (1) candidate to participate in the program.
  4. The nominee must be a current active member/miembro titular of their national ophthalmology society or affiliated subspecialty society for at least three (3) years and must be a member in good standing of the PAAO at the time of nomination.
  5. The nominee must agree to participate in all elements of the PAAO Curso, including but not limited to:
    • attend all mandatory/required meetings (see page 3; including, but not limited to, orientation; January work session in San Francisco; final session at PAAO Congress meeting)
    • complete a project that will benefit their nominating society or their community
    • work with a local mentor assigned by the Curso committee
  1. The nominee must have fluency in English (listening and speaking). With participants from English-, Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries, English is the ‘lingua franca’.
  2. Nominees that do not complete the program (attend all required meetings, work with a mentor, and complete a project) will not receive a certificate or any proof of partial attendance.
  3. Cost for participation will be shared by the nominating national ophthalmology society or affiliated subspecialty society, the individual participant, and the PAAO (see ‘Cost Sharing’ chart).
  4. Estimated annual PAAO Curso de Liderazgo class size: 16 – 18 participants.

PARTICIPANT SELECTION

  1. The PAAO Curso de Liderazgo Selection Committee will review and select participants based on completed nomination forms received by August 15, 2023 (Incomplete forms/documents or those received after the deadline will not be reviewed).
  2. Selected participants and the nominating National Ophthalmology Society or affiliated subspecialty society will be notified by the Curso de Liderazgo Selection Committee immediately following the Committee’s participant selection decisions.
  3. Nominees who are not selected for the 2023-2025 Curso de Liderazgo may be re-nominated the following year (but new nomination forms should be sent).

  • Participants will attend a virtual/Zoom orientation session during which requirements of the 2023-2025 Curso will be discussed, including mandatory sessions, projects, and mentors.

11-14 JANUARY 2024 – THURSDAY-SUNDAY

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – USA
Argonaut Hotel Arrive Thursday Morning, Depart Sunday Afternoon
  • Curso participants will meet from 2pm-5pm on Thursday, 11 January 2024, for an in-person orientation and project discussion (required)
  • Curso participants will meet jointly with participants of the AAO Leadership Development Program (AAO LDP).
  • Participants will participate in interactive workshops on topics relevant to leadership which may include leadership principles, communication, political advocacy, media relations, effective committee meetings and other pertinent topics. Participants will have an opportunity to network informally with classmates and PAAO leaders during social events.
  • Participants will present updates on their projects.

      (final abstracts must be submitted by 15 April 2025)
        • **Select projects will be presented to the graduating Curso group**
        • The best project of the 2023-2025 Curso will be selected to receive the Rich & Chita Abbot Young Leader Award. This award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated support of their national ophthalmology society and the PAAO and has participated in leadership activities at the national, subspecialty, or supranational society level.

* Note: Some National Ophthalmology Societies or Affiliated Subspecialty Societies may choose to arrange for different financial commitments for these segments between the individual participant and the society. If the nominating society is not able to financially support the participant they have nominated, it is the responsibility of the participant to pay airfare and lodging. The Pan-American Association has no responsibility whatsoever in these matters.
