Corneal Ectasia

This course gives covers the new developments in ectasia diagnosis and treatment

Spanish

CONTEXT

In the last twenty years, the treatment of ectasias has undergone an unprecedented change within the ophthalmology clinic. We have seen new technology and diagnostic systems as well as new Post Lasik ectasias.

Not all ophthalmologists are familiar with these pathologies, nor do they know their precise indications and therapeutic scope. In addition, the new intrastromal additive surgery space, the introduction of collagen cross-linking corneal therapies, and their interactions with each other are still a subject of research and debate. This course aims to fill a gap in corneal ectasia training.

THE DETAILS

Intended for: Ophthalmologists, ophthalmologists in training

Format: Online and self-paced with lifetime access

Duration: Approximately 5 weeks, 2-4 hours a week.

Certificate: 18 hours of PAAO Continuing Medical Education on completion

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course the participants will be able to:

  1. Describe an updated definition of ectasias, point out its etiopathogenesis and recognize its stages
  2. Explore from Schiascopy and topographic assistance for Refraction
  3. Make the Tomo/Topographic diagnosis by the Epithelial thickness, by the behavior of the Corneal Biomechanics
  4. Describe the Corneal surgical anatomy, and identify the different centrates, the Kappa angle, the visual axis, Corneal, and Pupillary
  5. You will be able to describe the corneal geometric definition and interpret the asphericity values
  6. Identify the differences between the different origins, behaviors, and treatments of an ectasia
  7. Describe ICRS Basic Actions: Where and what to place Primary or Secondary Segments
  8. Describe the Medical Treatment, its prophylaxis, the treatment of Allergies and Atopias
  9. Explain the importance of integrating the treatment of the ocular surface to the armamentarium of an Ectasia and how it should be proposed
  10. Describe the surgical treatment, its generalities, the crosslinking of corneal collagen, its types, and its technique.
  11. Describe what are the indications for corneal Remodeling, corneal grafts, and Bowman’s Membrane grafts
  12. Describe the uses and indications of the Excimer Laser, types of ablation assistance-amount of ablation allowed/suggested. Cases and combinations with ICRS and CXL Complications
  13. Describe treatments and optical rehabilitation with contact lenses, their different designs, types of uses, and indications
  14. Indicate optical treatment: Phakic and aphakic intraocular lenses

COURSE MATERIALS

  • Study guides, which facilitate the student’s learning process.
  • Audiovisual lectures, prepared by the teaching team on each topic. These will be available for online reading and in save/print version.
  • Reading material, available in Spanish and/or English in pdf format.
  • Concept maps, synoptic charts, tables, memory aids for quick reference for daily practice.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Application activities are used throughout the course consisting of:

  • Multiple choice questions
  • Open-ended, self-corrected questions with checklists
  • Question and answer forums

Each module will have a final exam that must be passed to move on to the next module. The number of attempts is unlimited, but must be passed to move on to the next module.

The activities will promote the exchange and use of students’ knowledge and experiences and will facilitate the application of new learning to professional practice.
